A2 vs A3 Charcoal Portrait: Which Size Should You Choose?
A2 and A3 can both produce a refined charcoal portrait, but they create a different sense of presence. The best choice depends on how many people are included, how much detail the reference contains, where the work will be displayed, and the feeling you want the finished portrait to carry.

Choose A3 for a focused, intimate portrait
A3 works well when the composition is simple and the portrait is meant to feel personal rather than physically dominant. It can suit a single face, a close child portrait, a personal study, or a gift that will be displayed in a smaller room.
A clear reference is still essential. A smaller sheet does not repair missing facial information; it simply asks the artist to make more selective decisions about texture, clothing, background, and crop.

Choose A2 when detail and presence matter most
A2 provides more room for facial modeling, beard and hair texture, clothing, hands, jewelry, or a meaningful object. It also creates a stronger wall presence, which can suit an elder memory portrait, formal tribute, couple portrait, or important family gift.
A single-person A2 portrait usually takes around two weeks. An urgent one-week schedule may sometimes be possible after the reference and current studio workload are reviewed.

Let the number of subjects influence the format
Every additional face needs enough space to preserve likeness. A couple portrait or composition with hands and personal objects may benefit from A2 because the artist can separate features and values without making the drawing feel crowded.
The final recommendation also depends on crop. Two closely framed faces may work differently from two full upper-body figures. Send the actual reference before committing to a size so the format supports the composition rather than forcing it.

Consider the display space before ordering
Think about viewing distance and the visual weight of the room. A3 can sit quietly within a gallery arrangement or personal corner. A2 is more likely to act as a focal piece above a console, in a sitting room, or within a dedicated tribute display.
